Hiring a car in Gibraltar
Located at the tip of Spain’s mainland is the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, a limestone rock which looks out over the glistening Mediterranean Sea. For over 1,000 years, Gibraltar has been recognised as an important naval base with a diverse population.
On average, Gibraltar has 320 days of sun each year, which is one of a number of reasons why this destination can be popular with tourists.
From the top of the Gibraltar rock, on a clear day, tourists can look out over the ocean to see the distant north African mountains, as well as having a beautiful viewpoint of the bay of Algeciras.
With a population of around 30,000 and an area of only 2.6 square miles, an outsider may think that Gibraltar is limited in terms of what it can offer to tourists. But with underground caves, beautiful beaches and many unique architectural buildings, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
What you need to know
With average summer temperatures soaring well over 20 degrees, and with the rocks extremely steep inclines, navigating your way around Gibraltar by foot alone is near enough impossible.
In addition to this, and due to Gibraltar’s many winding roads, public transport is limited and can often be unreliable. To make the most of your time visiting Gibraltar and to avoid expensive taxi rides, hiring a car is the most practical and cost effective way to explore the rock.

It’s worth taking a visit to the mosque located at Europa Point which is the most southerly mosque in Europe and one of the largest outside of a non Muslim country. With beautiful architecture, and as it’s located with the rock towering over the building, the site offers a great opportunity to take pictures.
A drive to the top of the Gibraltar rock will leave you exhilarated, however after a certain point, the best way to take in the views is to continue by foot. There are a few parking areas at the top which are located near many lookout points and tunnel entrances. But driving isn’t for the faint hearted, with twisting and narrow roads and many sheer drops to the side, this route can sometimes be a struggle.
A trip to Gibraltar wouldn’t be complete without a drive to the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, located at the foot of the rock, directly south of the town centre and just beyond the 16th century defensive walls and Trafalgar Cemetery.
Alternatively, to make the most of your hire car and for a slightly longer and less stressful drive, why not take a roadtrip across the Spanish border to Marbella, which is just over an hour away by car.
