Hiring a car in Tenerife

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, which sit to the west of Morocco in the North Atlantic Ocean. It's a hugely popular tourist destination, with a great choice of stunning beaches and boasting sunny weather for most of the year.

Hiring a car means that you can travel across the island with ease and see everything that it has to offer.

The main road in Tenerife is the TF-1, which runs from Adeje in the west, down and along the south coast and then up to Santa Cruz. This then becomes the TF-5, which goes along to Puerto de la Cruz.

What you need to know

Tenerife has a number of car hire providers, and you can find the most competitive deal by searching on our website. There's a great choice of vehicles, so whatever you're looking for, our providers will be able to help you out.

In addition, you can be reassured by the 24/7 support, free cancellation and free amendments if your circumstances change, so you can be confident that we're to help you out with anything that you need.

Where to pick up your car

Tenerife has two airports, Tenerife South (TFS) and Tenerife North (TFN), both of which have car hire providers. After you've collected your bags, follow signs for 'alquiler de coches' (car hire) alongside a picture of a key above a car to reach the supplier desks.

Alternatively, if you prefer to collect your vehicle from the city, you will find providers in both Puerto de la Cruz and Playa San Juan.

Where to go

As well as being the biggest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife is undoubtedly one of the most popular.

As well as boasting some beautiful coastal locations, Tenerife is home to Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain. Mount Teide National Park has a stunning volcanic lunar landscape and has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The island has a variety of different villages, towns and cities, from sleepy historic areas to those that are much livelier and favoured by younger visitors. You can explore them all with a hire car, allowing you to make the most of your trip.

Nearby Tenerife

One of the most popular areas in Tenerife is Los Cristianos, which is just 15km west of Tenerife South Airport. As well as an array of stunning beaches, Los Cristianos is popular for its beautiful harbour, that offers fishing trips, cruises, outings on glass bottom boats, diving excursions and ferries to the neighbouring island of La Gomera.

Near to Los Cristianos is the Costa Adeje, the newest of Tenerife's resorts. This area is brimming with upmarket hotels and attractions and is very much favoured by those looking for a certain level of luxury on their holiday. If you're a keen golfer then you can easily while away the day at Golf Costa Adeje, a 27-hole course close to the village of La Caleta.

Longer drives

Having a hire car means that you have the freedom to explore more of what this stunning island has to offer. This means you can head out into the areas beyond your resort.

Just over an hour north of Los Cristianos is Puerto de la Cruz, the main tourist destination in the north of Tenerife. Despite welcoming large numbers of visitors every year, this area retains its Spanish charm, boasting stunning cobbled streets and architecture - including the Church of Nuestra Señora de La Peña de Francía, which dates back to the 17th century.

Alternatively, an hour inland from Los Cristianos is Mount Teide, within Teide National Park. This is an area of true beauty and one you won't want to miss. You can even ride a cable car to a viewing platform on the mountain, which gives visitors spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and mountainous landscape.
