Car hire in Almeria
Hiring a car in Almeria
Unlike many of the more well established tourist centres in Spain, Almeria is a relative newcomer to the holiday market, growing from a tired old port with its best days in the history books, into one of Andalucia's most thriving cities and a hotspot for those looking to get themselves a beautiful break away from the masses.
In the past two decades alone, Almeria has proven itself a lively and attractive visitor-friendly city with much to offer, from a cultural journey through both historic and contemporary Andalucia, to a thriving tapas industry that manages to draw in thousands of tourists on its own every single year. For those who want to see the very best of what Almeria has to offer, car hire is the most convenient method of getting around, allowing you the chance to explore the area at your leisure throughout your stay.
What you need to know
An average annual temperature of more than 19C makes Almeria not only one of the hottest places in Europe, but also the driest city in the continent. Coupled with its challenging terrain and hilly scenery, it's best to tackle any sightseeing holiday in Almeria with a car hire, rather than trying to make it around on foot. Holiday Autos offers car hire from many top providers, and compares prices from over 1,500 companies to get the best deals available for you through our booking tool. We also offer free cancellation, no credit card fees as well as a contact centre available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, should you need our assistance with any matter relating to your car hire.
Where to pick up your car
When you arrive at Almeria Airport (LEI) and collect your luggage, you'll find the car hire desks from a range of companies located within the main terminal building before you exit the airport. Here, you can pick up your keys and all necessary documentation, before you get started on your holiday. The airport itself is located a mere 9km to the east of the city of Almeria, meaning it's an easy journey to your destination when you've collected your hire car.
There are also a number of car hire offices dotted around the city itself if you should want to hire a vehicle at any time throughout your stay for added convenience.

“The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time. Booking with Holiday Autos was easy and I received the car that I had asked for, just perfect!”
Where to go
Once you've collected the keys and picked up your hire car, the next step is to decide what you want to do and where you want to go in Almeria. Exploring this lovely Andalucian location will offer you so much to see and do, so the only problem you'll have is making the choice.
Whether you want to dive headlong into the tapas restaurants that make Almeria such a popular destination, see its range of historical buildings stretching all the way back to the 10th century, or perhaps just enjoy soaking up the sand on the beach, there really is something for everyone to enjoy in Almeria.
One of the benefits of hiring a car in Almeria from Holiday Autos is that you get the chance to visit some of the smaller places dotted along the Andalucian coast nearby, including the likes of San Jose. This coastal fishing village, located just 26km from Almeria itself, is perfect for those who have come to Andalucia to sample seafood, and the harbour is literally lined with seafood restaurant after seafood restaurant, each as good as the last. The desert-like scenery and palm trees also make San Jose the most beautiful place to get some holiday snaps.
Around the same distance in the other direction from Almeria is Aguadulce, a quieter and less popular fishing village than San Jose. Here, you can really soak up the sun at one of the best beaches in the region, Aguadulce beach, which offers not only Blue Flag standard sea and sand, but also a range of water sports for those who want to throw caution to the wind.
While Almeria is a fantastic place to visit with lots to see and do, the benefit of enjoying car hire in the city is that you have the freedom to see more of what Andalucia and beyond has to offer, all the while taking in the beautiful scenery of Spain.
One of the very best ways to see some beautiful sights on a drive is to take to the Andalucian coast and make the trip from Almeria to the popular city of Malaga. The two-hour drive takes you along the south coast of Spain on a number of cliffside roads that seem to hang out over the Mediterranean Sea, giving you the most serene and undisturbed views you could ever hope to discover. When you arrive in Malaga, there's also so much to see, whether you want to enjoy the tourist haven that is La Playa de la Caleta beach or drive up to the hilltop citadels Alcazaba and Gibralfaro for amazing views of the Costa del Sol mixed with a touch of history.
Another less popular place for visitors to Almeria to drive is Guadix, a cathedral city that is well off the beaten track. Around an hour inland from Almeria, Guadix dates back to the Roman times. One quirky trait of the town is that the vast majority of residents live underground in the cave district which has to be seen to be believed. The jutting, mountainous terrain of the area makes it a unique sight to see, and well worth the longer drive.
Top attractions to visit in Almeria
No trip to Almeria is complete without taking in some of the more varied attractions and sights it has to offer, and when you have hired a car from Holiday Autos, the freedom to do so opens up many opportunities.
Tapas is the main industry in the Andalucian city, but Almeria also has a fantastic range of seafood restaurants, meaning that you can enjoy a varied and extensive journey through Spanish cuisine during your stay, and doing so is highly recommended. Tapas is the star attraction in the city, with restaurants here having served up the popular dishes ever since the late 19th century. You can also find some lovely little terraces on which you can dine in tranquil surroundings as you watch the world pass by.
History is the other major reason to visit Almeria aside from its food, and if this is your reason to be in the city, then there's nowhere you have to see quite as much as Alcazaba. This fort takes you back to the very formation of Almeria in the 10th century and its history as a Moorish stronghold in Andalucia. The fort was known as one of the strongest in Spain, and visitors can take a walk through its historic walls and see what it was like to live there over a thousand years ago. The fort now contains lush gardens and water channels, as well as fantastic coastal views to top off your walk back in time.
Refugios de la Guerra Civil
The 10th century was not the only time Almeria was seen as something of a stronghold. During the Spanish civil war in the 1930s, it was the last Republican resistance in Andalucia. The heavy bombing the city encountered meant that engineers built the Refugios de la Guerra Civil, a series of underground tunnels and shelters. Take a walk through the more recent history of the city as you see where people hid and slept, as well as seeing the underground opera house it is home to.
