“The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”
Where to go
Eindhoven is split into seven districts and you’ll be able to explore all of them in your hire car. Centrum is where you will find many of the attractions, as well as shops and restaurants. One street that you certainly won’t want to miss is De Bergen, where you will find an enchanting mix of hip coffee shops, antique stores and fashionable people.
Nearby Eindhoven Airport
The university city of Tilburg lies not too far from Eindhoven Airport, making it a great destination to explore with your hire car. As well as beautiful buildings, there are plenty of green spaces and a vibrant cultural calendar to enjoy throughout the year. There is also a number of amusement parks in the vicinity, which the kids will love.
A little further afield, but not too much of a stretch with your hire car, is Rotterdam, which is well-known for its sea-faring heritage. Explore the Maritime Museum, complete with vintage ships for an insight into this fascinating history. Alternatively, hop over the border to Dusseldorf in Germany to wander the city’s streets in search of trendy boutiques.
Eating and drinking
While there are restaurants serving up food from all over the world in Eindhoven, be sure to sample some of the local fare. The best way to do this is to head to one of the many proeflokaal or eetlokaal establishments. These homely pubs have many dishes featuring meat, cabbage, potatoes and cheese, but be sure not to leave without trying a Dutch pancake.
Things to do
There is no shortage of things to do in Eindhoven, from heading to a local food market to visiting one of the many museums. Electronics giant Philips was set up in Eindhoven in the 1890s and retained a presence there for a long time, so the Philips Museum is well worth a look. Alternatively, opt for the Van Abbemuseum if you’re more interested in art.
St Catherine’s Church is a really interesting landmark to discover, not just because of its neo-gothic character, but also its diverse history. Over the years, it has been damaged and repaired due to war and in the 18th century was even used as a stables and weapon store. Take note its twin towers – known affectionately as David and Maria – that beautifully display the French gothic style.
