While you're in the north of the island, make sure that you you take a trip to Smugglers Cove. If you want to explore further inland, Zante has some beautiful villages that exude the traditional culture of the Greek island. Keri is just 21km south of the town of Zakynthos, but is much more quaint, having refrained from catering too much to tourism. From the central square you can enjoy stunning views of the Ionian Sea, or you can explore the traditional stone-built houses and narrow streets.
On the north side of the island, the village of Volimes is a haven of traditional Greek culture. This mountainous village still boasts its stone-built houses and churches, as well as the windmills that stand on the hills above. One of the most stunning sights here is the 16th century monastery of Agios Georgios.
