Car hire at Toronto Airport
Car hire at Toronto Airport
Toronto Airport (YYZ) is officially known as Lester B Pearson International Airport and is the biggest and busiest hub in Canada. You’ll find it 22.5 km outside of Toronto city centre, with the drive to downtown taking around 40 minutes. The quickest route is via the Gardiner Expy and ON-427 roads.
What I need to know
You have a fair amount of choice when it comes to Toronto Airport car rental, as there are more than half a dozen companies operating out of the hub. You’ll spot some well-known names, but the best way to ensure you get the most cost efficient deal is to compare car hire with the Holiday Autos site.
Where to pick up my car
Most of the Toronto Airport car hire firms have desks in the terminals, with some located on level one of Terminal One and others in the Terminal Three car park. The few companies that require pick-up further away offer a free shuttle bus to get you there. Be sure to check the arrangements with your individual company at the time of booking.

Where to go
There are so many districts to Toronto that it’s hard to know where to start, although you’ll find having a hire car will allow you to explore many of them. From the Harbourfront to Downtown, there’s plenty going on, while the Entertainment District is perfect for an evening of showbiz. Head to Chinatown of Greektown for some wonderfully authentic food.
Nearby Toronto Airport
The city of Mississauga is not far from Toronto Airport at all and offers a different perspective on Lake Ontario. It is a popular shopping destination but also features some pleasant trails and a working lighthouse if you prefer to stay outdoors. For a taste of small town life, drive further on to Oakville, which has a nice selection of museums and restaurants.
Longer drives
It would be a shame to come all the way to Ontario and not visit Niagara Falls. Drive for an hour and a quarter towards the border with the United States of America and you’ll reach this impressive waterfall with a drop of 53.6m. Drive for four and a half hours in the opposite direction from Toronto Airport and you’ll reach the capital of Canada, Ottawa.
Eating and drinking
While there is no shortage of places to dine in Toronto, the city does not have a distinctive cuisine that’s all its own. This is no bad thing, as it means you can enjoy dishes influenced by food from all over the world. There’s also plenty to suit every budget, from informal café right up to expensive designer restaurants.
Things to do
Among the many things you may wish to do in Toronto, there are a few that should be at the top of your list. These include ascending the CN Tower, as the views from the top are truly breathtaking. Another is to meander past the more than 100 vendors at the St Lawrence Market South, where you’re bound to pick up a souvenir to take home.
Sightseeing
Spend some time exploring the 18th-century Casa Loma and its wonderful gardens. The informative tour guides will be happy to impart their knowledge as they show you around. Hockey is a huge passion for many Canadians, so make a visit to the sport’s Hall of Fame for an interactive experience.
