Capital city Sofia is just over six km away from the airport and you'll probably be using it as your base if you're holidaying, as it's a fascinating metropolis boasting beautiful scenery as well as tourist hotspots. You could also head to the ski resorts of Vitosha and Borovets, both an hour's drive away, or the scenic towns of Bankya and German.
If you're keen to hit the open road in your Sofia Airport car rental vehicle, you'll find plenty of destinations on offer further afield. There are the Rila Mountains and their majestic monastery around 120 km away, or the large ski resort of Bankso a two-hour drive out of town.
