What you need to know

If you’re visiting tourist attractions located in central Manhattan, then it’s worth parking up for the day and getting the subway, as roads are often congested. However, if you’re staying in upper Manhattan and other parts of New York, car hire is strongly advised, with distances between attractions located far apart, and taxi fares expensive.

Longer drives

The flexibility of your car hire means that you can explore parts of New York state that are located outside of the immediate centre, whenever you choose to.

Usually, when we think of New York, white sandy beaches and blue seas don’t even come into consideration. However, Rockaway Beach, located in Queens is roughly an hours drive from Manhattan and is the perfect place to relax and catch a few rays. The beach has a variety of concessions, playgrounds and outdoor activities and is the city’s only legal surfing beach.

Nicknamed the Queen of American Lakes, Lake George is located at the southeast base of the Adirondack Mountains, just over a three-hour drive from New York City.

For those who are more interested in arts and culture, take a trip to Long Island, which features the Heckscher Museum of Art and the Parrish Art Museum where you can explore both traditional and modern art works.

Take in some of the best sights in New York with the flexibility and independence your hire car offers you.

Brooklyn Bridge

When it comes to bridges, there’s nothing quite like Brooklyn Bridge. As you leave Brooklyn, drive across one of the oldest suspension bridges in the whole of America, to Manhattan and into the heart of New York. The views offer you incredible scenes of the Manhattan skyline, which looks like something straight from a postcard picture. Whether you choose to visit during the day or night the bridge offers a great chance to take panoramic pictures of the city and this iconic National Historic Landmark.

Times Square

No tourist should visit New York and not take a trip to Times Square. Located at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue this major commercial intersection will leave you lost for words with its endless billboards, advertisements and sparkling lights.

Coney Island

For somewhere a little less swamped by tourists, why not take a drive over to Coney Island in Brooklyn, a popular leisure and entertainment destination?
