Today, it boasts many attractions, making it the ideal place to visit for a weekend away. It is connected to a host of other cities via the A1 and the A46.

Newark and the surrounding Nottinghamshire area offers plenty of things to do come rain or shine. You can discover the caves and fascinating Sherwood Forest, check out historical landmarks like castles and churches or enjoy a day of retail therapy in the many shops. There's also plenty to do with the kids here.

Once you've got your hire car, you can hit the roads and explore as much as you can around Newark. There's Nottingham just 32km away, Doncaster 52 minutes away and Leicester within 46 minutes' drive. You should even be able to reach Leeds in just under an hour.

Longer drives

If you want to take a longer excursion from your Newark base, the town is very well connected by road to other cities. You can be in wonderful York in around an hour and 35 minutes, while the A17 will take you all the way to King's Lynn in Norfolk in around the same time. Huddersfield is approximately an hour and 40 minutes away.

You're sure to be surprised by how much there is to do here. Newark Town Hall is open as a museum on Mondays and Saturdays and there's the Buttermarket for shopping. You could take in a show at the Palace Theatre, admire the National Civil War Centre or be moved by the stories at the Holocaust Centre.

Sightseeing

Newark offers a number of landmarks including the Church of St Mary Magdalene, which has the tallest spire in the county. There's Newark Castle too, which was built in 1123 and is now ruined. Its claim to fame is that King John is believed to have died there in 1216.
