Denver - the state capital of Colorado - dates back to the Old West era, making it one of the most historic cities in the USA. It is served by Denver Airport (DEN), which lies 26km away from the city centre and can be reached in 23 minutes by car via the I-70 W.

What I need to know

There are a large number of Denver car rental offices in the city itself, and many more are located at Denver Airport. Use the Holiday Autos site to compare car hire and you will receive the added benefits of free cancellation, customer support and no credit card fees.

Where to pick up my car

If you have opted to use a Denver car hire company situated at the airport, you can catch a courtesy shuttle service to and from the offices at Jeppesen Terminal. They pick-up and drop off from the terminal’s level 5, island 4, outside doors 505-513 on the east side and 504-512 on the west side.

Where to go

As a historic state capital, Denver boasts a plethora of things to do and see. Particularly intriguing are its world-famous museums and Old West buildings. It is also a great starting point for exploring the rest of Colorado, which offers many opportunities for snow sports, and even taking a road trip to explore more of the USA.

Nearby Denver

From the city centre, it’s a mere 21km to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, where visitors can indulge in many outdoor activities. There is also plenty to do in the municipality of Boulder - a half hour drive from Denver - with its many trails, parks and outdoor spaces.

Longer drives

From Denver, it is 112km to the iconic Rocky Mountains National Park, which makes for a 1.5 hour drive. There are many beautiful drives and trails within this protected area. In just over an hour in the car you can arrive at the otherworldly Colorado Springs, which lies at the eastern foot of the Rocky Mountains.

Eating and drinking

When visiting Denver, ensure you try the local specialities, which include trout, rocky mountain oysters and green chilli. Denver is also home to numerous microbreweries, making it a perfect destination for fans of craft ale.

Things to do

There are plenty of museums to visit in Denver - not least the Denver Art Museum and the mansion of Molly Brown - the famed survivor of the Titanic. However, while you’re surrounded by all the natural beauty of Colorado it’s a good idea to embrace the great outdoors and hit some of the many walking trails nearby.

Sightseeing

While in Denver, why not take a tour of Colorado State Capitol to learn more about the history of the state, and - by extension - the USA as a whole? The Denver Botanic Gardens offer a picturesque day out, and kids will love Dinosaur Ridge where there are many fossils from the late Jurassic age.
