Where to go

With the Chiltern Hills to one side and London on the other, Watford sits not far from the confluence of the Colne and Gade rivers. The commercial centre has moved to the north of the town over the years and this is where you’ll find the most bustling area, with plenty of attractions. Put your hire car to good use, however, and explore the whole town to find many hidden gems.

Nearby Watford

Having a hire car will mean you can explore the area surrounding Watford easily. While London is the obvious option, other destinations, such as Chelmsford and Oxford, have lots to offer. The latter is centred around the university, which was founded in the 12th century, and consists of 38 colleges displaying stunning architecture.

Longer drives

Venture a bit further away from Watford and you can explore the Midlands, with Birmingham being an obvious draw. Here you’ll see a world-class art gallery, featuring works by the pre-Raphaelites, a network of canals and some great shopping. Head to Lowestoft for the quintessential English seaside experience, complete with fish and chips on the prom.

Eating and drinking

When it comes to dining you’ve got plenty of choice. Make your way into London to find all sorts of cuisine or stick to a smaller, yet still extensive, choice of eateries in Watford. You may wish to go classic British with a Sunday roast at a local pub or you might prefer to dine at the speciality restaurants that are dotted around the town centre.

Things to do

If you like the theatre, then Watford has some brilliant venues for plays, pantomime and other types of performances. Take a look at the schedule for the Watford Palace Theatre and the Watford Colosseum to see what’s on during your stay. Alternatively, you could go for a walk in Oxhey Woods or play a few rounds of mini golf.

Sightseeing

Among the sights you may wish to visit during your visit to Watford are the historic Cheslyn House and Bhaktivedanta Manor. The latter is a mock Tudor house that was donated by George Harrison to the Hare Krishna movement and offers guided tours. In an entirely different direction is Vicarage Road Stadium, home to Watford Football Club.
