Where to pick up my car

Walsall's car hire firms are all clustered in and around the town centre, which is just off Junction 9 of the M6 and ringed by the A4148. Alternatively, those picking up a car from an airport rental firm can do so at the Birmingham Airport (BHX) terminal.

Where to go

Walsall's Arboretum is a prime visitor attraction. As its name suggests, the park has a wealth of fascinating trees and there is also a boating lake to enjoy. In recent years it has been expanded and new facilities have been added, including a visitor centre. The town also features the Lime Pits Nature Reserve and has its own football team.

Nearby Walsall

Birmingham is easily reached just down the M6, while local attractions in nearby towns include the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley, half an hour away by car. Just north of Walsall is the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, while yachting can be enjoyed on Chasewater.

Longer drives

The M6 offers easy access both north and south. Coventry can be reached in just over 40 minutes and Shakespeare's home town of Stratford-on-Avon in an hour, Manchester in an hour-and-a-half and Liverpool in two hours. The Peak District National Park is also little over an hour's drive away.

Eating and drinking

Walsall has plenty of varied food from around the globe. Like other towns in the West Miidlands, there are plenty of curries and other south Asian dishes, while a more traditional Black Country delicacy is the hot pork sandwich. There are also many breweries in the region and a number of craft ales to try.

Things to do

Those who fancy some exercise can go walking in Cannock Chase, while football fans can choose from five different clubs in the Birmingham-Black Country area. There is also horse-racing at Wolverhampton and international cricket at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Chocoholics will be sure to visit Cadbury World in Bournville.

Sightseeing

Nearby Dudley has a medieval castle in the middle of its zoo, with the battlements offering a panoramic vista. For those checking out the industrial heritage of the area, try a canal walk along the Rushall Canal or the Walsall Canal - just two of the many artificial waterways that characterise this part of the Midlands.
