Where to pick up my car

Truro's car rental services are located all around the city, but most are in or near the centre, close by the A390 that passes through. Those picking up a car via an airport rental firm can do so at the Newquay Airport (NQY) terminal.

Where to go

Truro Cathedral is the city's most prominent landmark with its twin Gothic towers. It's the first cathedral built from scratch in Britain since the 13th century, being constructed between 1880 and 1910. The city sits on the edge of the Roseland Heritage Coast, where the Truro and Tresillian rivers flow into the Fal and then out to sea.

Nearby Truro

The famous port of Falmouth lies half an hour south on the coast, while Land's End is just over an hour away. On the way, don't miss Penzance, famous for its history of piracy and smuggling. Indeed, many caves and hideouts for contraband can be found in the rugged shoreline of the area.

Longer drives

While Cornwall has some beautiful scenery, so too does neighbouring Devon. Historic Plymouth is an hour and 20 minutes away and just beyond the city lies Dartmoor, with its famous high moors and granite tors. Motorists can reach the seaside resort of Torquay from Truro in just over two hours.

Eating and drinking

Like other coastal locations in Cornwall, Truro offers lots of great fresh seafood. However, for a truly local taste try a Cornish pasty - a mix of spicy meat and vegetables wrapped in pastry. There will also be plenty of great clotted cream with scones and steaming pots of tea to be enjoyed as well.

Things to do

The cathedral is a must-see and admission is free, but on a nice day the beautiful parks and gardens are also well worth visiting too, such as the Burncoose Gardens and National Trust-owned Trelissick Estate. For shopping, try the Pannier Indoor Market or enjoy one of the regular farmers' markets.

Sightseeing

The Roseland Heritage Coast offers some of the finest coastal and estuary scenery in the whole of Cornwall, while the city itself is a great place to explore. A number of self-guided tours are available, or, if you prefer, a tour guide can take you round.
