Torquay is a popular seaside resort on a part of the Devon coast known as the English Riviera. Famous for its mild climate and popular beaches, it combines the classic English seaside town atmosphere with ease of access and proximity to some fine countryside. It was made famous by the fictional comedy Fawlty Towers.

Where to pick up my car

Most of Torquay's car rental services are based in the town centre, with others located around the seafront along the bay. For those picking up a car from an airport rental firm, the place to go is the terminal at Exeter Airport (EXT).

Car Hire Reviews Torquay

  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go

Babbacombe Model Village offers a great day out in the town centre, while Torre Abbey offers plenty of history, dating back to its construction in 1196. Kept in excellent condition, it is now a museum. The best beaches are Babbacombe, Oddicombe and Meadfoot, while the whole seafront is full of traditional amusements.

Nearby Torquay

Paignton Zoo is less than 20 minutes away from Torquay and has over 200 kinds of animal on display across its 80 acres. From giraffes and monkeys to elephants and crocodiles, the zoo is a great place for family visits. Other nearby attractions include the Berry Head National Nature Reserve, 40 minutes away.

Longer drives

Torquay lies about an hour in either direction from the attractive cathedral city of Exeter and Plymouth. Beyond the latter city lies the beautiful county of Cornwall with its wonderful coastal scenery, while half an hour inland from Torquay is Dartmoor National Park.

Eating and drinking

Torquay offers a huge wealth of dining to enjoy, from traditional fish and chips to cuisine from all over the world. Italian, Chinese and Indian food will be easy to find here, as in any large English town. The south-west of England produces lots of cider, while Devon is famous for its clotted cream.

Things to do

For those who want to enjoy a day on the beach, Torquay is ideal with its golden sands and benign climate. Other great activities include having a ride on the Torquay Land Train and visiting Kent's Cavern, which features the oldest piece of human bone ever found in Europe.

Sightseeing

Babbacombe Downs is the highest clifftop promenade in England and Portland Bill is visible on a clear day. The clifftop railway provides a fun descent from here to the beach. Another great sightseeing activity is to take a guided tour through the parts of the town that feature in Agatha Christie's detective novels.
