Where to go

Surrey features some beautiful countryside, such as the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It also has some fine museums, such as the Brooklands Museum in Weybridge, the home of Concorde and the place where British motorsport began. Great country houses include Polesdon Lacey and Leith Hill Place, once home of composer Vaughan Williams.

Nearby Surrey

London lies just north of Surrey and as well as the attractions in the heart of the capital, south London features famous places like Kew Gardens, Crystal Palace Park and the famous tennis courts of Wimbledon. Just south of the county is the South Downs National Park.

Longer drives

Further south, several coastal resorts are within easy reach. These include Brighton, which is about an hour away, while Bournemouth is an hour and a half away. The New Forest National Park is an hour away and it takes two hours to reach Bristol.

Eating and drinking

Surrey has plenty of traditional English food and the various towns will feature continental, Chinese and Indian dining options. In the countryside, there will be plenty of places to enjoy afternoon tea and drink options include beers brewed from hops in neighbouring Kent and even the occasional local wine.

Things to do

Horse racing fans can enjoy the world-famous Epsom Downs racecourse, while other great attractions to visit include Thorpe Park between Chertsey and Staines, which has many rides to keep the family happy. Steam enthusiasts can enjoy the Great Cockrow Railway, a narrow-gauge mini railway near Chertsey.

Sightseeing

Notable sights include the Martian tripod sculpture in Woking, in tribute to H.G Wells' book the War of the Worlds, which starts on nearby Horsell Common. The downs have some great views and none better than that at the top of Leith Hill Tower, which stands on the highest spot in south-east England.
