Where to pick up my car

Where to go

Stafford Castle is a 900-year-old Norman fortress, compete with earthworks and a visitor centre. The Ancient High House in the town centre is a classic example of Tudor architecture, while animal lovers can enjoy the Gentleshaw Birds of Prey and Wildlife centre in the middle of town, featuring everything from owls to lizards.

Nearby Stafford

Attractions close to Stafford include the magnificent mansion of Shugborough House and its estate, which is now owned by the National Trust, while Ingestre Hall is another impressive mansion. The RAF Museum at Cosford near Wolverhampton is half an hour away by car, as are the green spaces and woods of Cannock Chase.

Longer drives

With the M6 skirting Stafford, it is easy to reach nearby big cities to the north in under two hours, such as Manchester and Liverpool. To the south, Birmingham is around 45 minutes away. For those preferring countryside, the Peak District National Park can be reached in an hour.

Eating and drinking

Staffordshire has plenty of traditional English food to enjoy, plus the usual array of outlets selling Italian, Indian or Chinese cuisine. Those enjoying a beer in Stafford will find it may not have travelled very far, as the nearby town of Burton is one of the main centres of the UK brewing industry.

Things to do

The Amerton Railway offers a narrow-gauge steam train experience and is a few minutes east of the town along the A518, while the Staffordshire County Showground offers a great reason to visit the town in summer when big events are on. Stafford also has some fine parks and riverside walks.

Sightseeing

Those with a keen interest in local history will not just visit the local castles and halls, as the Trent and Mersey Canal provides a lovely waterside visit and an insight into the industrial heritage of the area. The Collegiate Church of St Mary is the town's finest ecclesiastical building.
