Romford is a great starting point for anyone wanting to drive across the whole of London due to its position on the outskirts of East London. It's also a perfect base for those wanting to explore the county of Essex, home to the historic city of Colchester as well as some lovely seaside resorts, such as Southend and Clacton-on-Sea.

Central London is around a 50-minute drive from Romford, but the journey may be quicker if you leave your car at an Underground station and complete the journey by Tube. Around 55 minutes from Romford is the Essex seaside resort of Southend-on-Sea, which provides a welcome break from the bustle of the capital and is home to the world's longest leisure pier.

Longer drives

Brighton with its iconic Royal Pavilion and Victorian pier is around an hour and 35 minutes' drive from Romford, while the white cliffs of Dover can be reached in roughly the same amount of time if you're driving in the opposite direction. From the cliffs, you'll be able to enjoy breathtaking views across the English Channel.

A ride on the Coca-Cola London Eye provides amazing views across the capital, while The View from the Shard - the UK's tallest building, at 1,016 ft tall - offers even better panoramic views of the city and its surroundings.
