Where to go

Newport features the St Woolos cathedral, an impressive building founded by Saint Gwynllyw (whose name was adapted to Woolos) in the 5th century. Features include a memorial to the 19th century Chartist movement. Just outside the city is Celtic Manor, a conference centre and championship golf course that staged the 2010 Ryder Cup.

Newport lies just west of Chepstow Racecourse, the leading horse racing venue in wales, while Cardiff is also close by. Cardiff Castle is an impressive building, while the iconic Principality Stadium is a great place to see a Wales rugby home game. The city also hosts international football and cricket.

Longer drives

The M4 corridor offers easy access westwards to Swansea and the beautiful Gower peninsula, while on the English side of the Severn the city of Bath and ancient stone circle at Stonehenge are Unesco world heritage sites. The mountainous Brecon Beacons national park lies to the north of Newport.

Eating and drinking

Newport has plenty of good restaurants and cafes to choose from, while eating out is one of the fun ways to spend time in Cardiff Bay. For those who want to try a distinctly Welsh food, Welsh rarebit is a must, while local beers include Cardiff-brewed Brains.

Things to do

The area features lots of things to do, from bird-spotting at the Newport Wetlands to checking out the rich Roman history. The latter is represented by the ruins of Caerleon Roman Baths and the National Roman Legion Museum. Keen outdoors lovers will enjoy a trip to the Brecon Beacons, featuring great mountains like Pen Y Fan.

Sightseeing

The area offers some great coastline to visit. As well as the Gower Peninsula and Cardiff Bay, there is Barry Island and its beach, as well as Roose, the town on the southernmost point in Wales. There are many more castles in the area too, such as Caerphilly, Caldicot and Raglan.
