Nearby Loughborough

The city of Leicester is just a 25-minute drive from Loughborough, where attractions range from the futuristic (the National Space Centre) to the historic with a modern twist, as Leicester Cathedral is now the final resting place of medieval ruler King Richard III, after his skeleton was found under a local car park in 2012.

Longer drives

To the north of Loughborough lies Sheffield, which can be reached by car in around an hour and 15 minutes. The city's Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet offers visitors the chance to step inside an 18th century village, complete with working mill and cottages. To the south of Loughborough is London, just under a three-hour drive away.

Eating and drinking

The county of Leicestershire is the home of Red Leicester cheese, flavoursome Stilton and also the pork pie, all of which you'll find on sale in abundance during a trip to the area. Loughborough itself has plenty of bars and restaurants serving cuisine from all over the world, from Leicestershire itself to as far away as Australia.

Things to do

The Great Central Railway is Britain's only mainline steam railway and operates from Loughborough to Birstall every weekend. The National Space Centre in Leicester is a must-visit while you're in the area, with a key attraction being the capsule that British astronaut Tim Peake returned to Earth in following a stint at the International Space Station.
