Where to go

London Gatwick Airport offers swift and easy access to London, with the centre of the capital being an hour-and-a-half away by car. The M23 motorway provides a swift link with the M25 orbital motorway, which means you can quickly move on to the east or west, depending which part of London you want to visit.

Nearby London Gatwick Airport

The countryside near London Gatwick Airport is very attractive, with the Surrey Hills and High Weald Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty both located within a few miles. The South Downs National Park is half an hour away to the south-west. The Wakehurst Estate with its botanical gardens is 20 minutes south of the airport.

Longer drives

While many will drive into London, a journey southward offers a chance to visit popular south coast resorts like Brighton. To the west, Oxford is less than two hours away and a journey to Bath or Bristol takes between two and two-and-a-half hours.

Eating and drinking

The south of England will offer every type of cuisine you could wish for. While traditional English food can be enjoyed as well as Italian, Indian or Chinese cuisine, look out for London specialities such as pie and mash or jellied eels. Many English beers will be made with hops grown in nearby counties such as Kent.

Things to do

With the south of London within easy reach, great places to visit include the All England Club at Wimbledon, 45 minutes away. While the annual tennis championships draw in big crowds each summer, the museum is open all year round. A similar journey time will access King Henry VIII's former residence of Hampton Court.

Sightseeing

While the nearby countryside offers some great vistas, those who really want to see the sights should head into London, where places like Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, St Paul's Cathedral and Trafalgar Square are likely to feature on any tourist itinerary. To the south, check out Brighton Pavilion and the city's impressive Regency architecture.
