Car hire at Glasgow Airport

Glasgow Airport (GLA) is an international airport and gateway to Scotland. It is located just under seven miles from Glasgow city centre and has become the second busiest in the country after Edinburgh. You can drive to Glasgow in less than 20 minutes via the M8. Once you arrive, you’ll find a port that has been made prosperous on trade and shipbuilding, with a lively cultural scene.

What I need to know

With more than 15 car suppliers operating out of Glasgow Airport, you’ll have plenty of choice. Vehicles on offer range from mini and compact models to SUVs and estate cars, meaning you can find the best car for you at a great price. You’re likely to recognise some of the big name companies, but by using the Holiday Autos site you can compare car hire deals to get exactly what you need.

Where to pick up my car

Many of the car hire companies have desks inside the terminal building and you will find them in the domestic arrivals hall. For those firms that require you to pick your car up from a different location, there are free shuttle buses and meet and greet services available to help.

Where to go

Glasgow Airport car hire will allow you to discover the many sides of Glasgow and the surrounding area. These range from the historic George Square in the centre of the city to Kelvingrove Art Museum and the Glasgow Science Centre. Some of Scotland’s Championship golf courses, such as Royal Troon and Gleneagles, are also within easy driving distance.

Within 40 minutes you could be in Falkirk, which is home to the famous rotating boat lift, known as the Falkirk Wheel. Just as majestic are the shimmering forms of The Kelpies, the biggest equine sculptures in the world. A similar distance away is Stirling, where you will find one of the most important castles in Scotland’s history.

Longer drives

Edinburgh, the whole of Scotland and even further afield is opened up to you with Glasgow Airport car rental. You could head south into the borders and discover Melrose, with its stunning abbey, or Alnwick Castle, where scenes from Harry Potter were filmed. Make your way north to reach the rugged Highlands and take ferries across to some of Scotland’s most beautiful and remote islands.

Eating and drinking

Glasgow boasts a vibrant food scene, with restaurants to accommodate all tastes and budgets. Merchant City, once home to the city’s food market, provides a polished dining and drinking experience, while gentrified Finnieston offers novel culinary experiences and Kelvinbridge offers an international flavour.

Things to do

Sightseeing

Said to be the final resting place of St Mungo, Glasgow’s patron saint, Glasgow cathedral is a fine example of gothic architecture and is worth adding to your sightseeing itinerary.
