Where to go

Brick Lane is the place that many Bangladeshi immigrants settled after coming to the UK and it is home to myriad traditional curry houses, as well as markets selling spices, saris and other wares from Asia. In 2012, East London provided the location for much of the Summer Olympics, with the stadium situated in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

If we use Whitechapel - where Jack the Ripper committed his crimes - as a starting point, the iconic St Paul's Cathedral is just 20-minute drive away, as is the Monument to the Great Fire of London, which took place in 1666. Shakespeare's Globe theatre, close to the site of the original, is the same distance away, on the other side of the River Thames.

Longer drives

The whole of London is your oyster if you're exploring by car, so drive to the former home of King Henry VIII, Hampton Court Palace (around 80 minutes from Whitechapel) or head north to Leavesden (an hours' drive). Here, you'll find the studios where the eight Harry Potter films were made, which now house the Warner Bros Studio Tour.

Eating and drinking

In recent years, everything from a cafe serving just crisp sandwiches to an eatery that only serves cereal have popped up in East London, with the area among the first to embrace new food trends. Shoreditch is home to regular street food markets, while for a more traditional East London dining experience, pie, mash and liquor, or jellied eels are a must-try.

There is too much to do in London to list in one short paragraph, but we'll give it a go: Buckingham Palace, 10 Downing Street, the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square, the London Eye … and that's without even mentioning any of the city's many museums and art galleries.

Sightseeing

Designed in 1673 by Sir Christopher Wren, St Paul's Cathedral with its distinctive dome and ornate ceiling is one of London's most iconic sights. This is where Prince Charles married Diana, Princess of Wales in 1981, and it's the final resting place of historical figures including Lord Nelson and Alexander Fleming, who discovered penicillin.
