Where to go

Although Dover is a coastal town, its main attraction is not the beaches. But you can see the beautiful White Cliffs of Dover, one of the country’s most important natural features. There is also a huge amount of history in the region that you can explore.

Nearby Dover

You can head north up the A256 and end up at the seaside resort of Margate, where you can enjoy the traditional English beaches, with all the expected rides and attractions. You could also drive up the A2 to Canterbury, where you can see the medieval centre of the town.

Longer drives

If you like a long drive with stunning natural scenery as the reward, you can head off on the M20 motorway to the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There, you can relax and take in some of the gorgeous views. You could also drive down the A259 to Hastings, where you can see the town in which one of the most famous battles in English history was fought.

Eating and drinking

The proximity of the sea means you’ll be able to try all sorts of delicious seafood so make sure you’re hungry when you arrive. There are plenty of varieties of food to try in Dover, from the traditional English fare to some of the more exotic options originating from continents afar.

Things to do

You should be sure to stop by Dover Castle, a medieval fortress that was founded in the 11th century. It has been described as the ‘key to England’ because of its defensive significance throughout the centuries. You can also visit the Kearsney Abbey Gardens, where there is plenty to do and see.

Sightseeing

When you’re in Dover, you have to stop by the world-famous White Cliffs, which has served as a recognisable symbol of Britain for centuries. You can explore the lighthouses and go on a walking tour around the area, which is the closest point in the country to France. On a clear day, you can even see the French coastline.
