Where to go

Derby's city centre has a fascinating industrial history and is home to a stunning cathedral, but hiring a car will allow you to explore the nearby Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as a range of historic stately homes and quaint countryside villages, immersing you in the heart of England.

Nearby Derby

Within an hour's drive of Derby, you can visit the beautiful Peak District National Park (35 minutes away) and sample a traditional Bakewell tart in the small market town they were named after (55 mins). Thrilling rides can be found at Alton Towers theme park (45 mins), or you can experience a cable car ride at the Heights of Abraham (35 mins).

Longer drives

If you want to venture a little further afield, you can travel all the way back to the 18th century at Chatsworth House (1 hour away). Lincoln can be reached in under 90 minutes, with its medieval castle the only place in the world where original copies of both the Magna Carta and Charter of the Forest can be seen. If you can't get enough of historic cities, Cambridge is just over 90 minutes away from Derby.

Eating and drinking

Derbyshire is the birthplace of both the Bakewell Tart and Bakewell Pudding, with the Bakewell Baking Festival celebrating all things cake each summer. The county also prides itself on its locally-produced cheeses; Derby cheese has a mild flavour and a creamy texture.

Things to do

Chatsworth House, the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, is one of Derbyshire's highlights, with this majestic country seat (dating from 1707) and its beautiful gardens open to the public on certain days. Fellow stately homes Calke Abbey and Donington Park are also well worth a visit.

Sightseeing

The Heights of Abraham offers cable car rides from which to see the sights over the stunning countryside, as well as tours of natural underground caverns and a fossil museum, taking you back to Derby's prehistoric days. If you prefer being above ground, there are countless walks and hikes to be enjoyed across the Peak District National Park, which is the perfect place to take in lungfuls of Great British country air.
