Where to pick up my car

Where to go

Chesterfield is most famous for the 13th century Church of St Mary and All Saints, with its crooked spire. This was probably caused by the high amount of green timber used, which buckled and warped due to the weight of the lead tiles.

There are daily tours of the spire and the church building from Mondays to Saturdays.

Nearby Chesterfield

The town lies just south of Sheffield, where attractions include the Winter Gardens, the Meadowhall Shopping Centre and the Crucible Theatre.

To the west is the Peak District, England's oldest national park. Amid its fine dales and moorland are great country homes such as Chatsworth, plus a fascinating array of caves that are open to the public.

Longer drives

With the M1 close by, it is easy to get around central and northern England. The cities of Derby and Nottingham, home to the legendary Robin Hood, are to the south, while to the north, York oozes history. Manchester is also easily reached via a scenic drive through the Peak District.

Eating and drinking

Chesterfield has plenty of traditional English pubs and cafes to enjoy, but for a truly special Derbyshire delicacy, drive up the A619 to Bakewell. Famous for its Bakewell tart and Bakewell pudding, these wonderful treats are perfect for those who love some pastry, jam and almond treats. Bakewell pudding is particularly good topped with hot custard.

Things to do

Keen walkers can enjoy stretching their legs in the Peak District, with pleasant walks around the various dales, on the Chatsworth Estate and on the moors. The more adventurous can enjoy the vast plateau of Kinder Scout, the highest mountain in the national park at 636 metres high.

Sightseeing

In addition to the crooked spire and Chatsworth, those who love seeing historic buildings can also head east a few miles to Bolsover, where the town's famous castle stands. Built in the 17th century, it is a grand example of Stuart era opulence and is owned and maintained by English Heritage.
