Where to go

Stately home fans will love nearby Tatton Hall (2 hours' drive away), with its grounds full of deer, and Arley Hall and Gardens (40 minutes). Port Sunlight Museum and Garden Village (half an hour away by car), featuring the Lady Lever Art Gallery, on the Wirral offers a brilliant glimpse into the lives of the workers at the sunlight soap factory in the 19th century.

The city of Liverpool, home of The Beatles and the world-famous Cavern Club is just a 40-minute drive from Chester. The city's renovated Albert Dock area has its own Tate Modern and a fascinating Titanic exhibition at the Merseyside Maritime Museum. An hour's drive away in North Wales seaside town Llandudno with its Victorian pier and cable car rides up the Great Orme mountainside.

Longer drives

There are some beautiful natural spots to be found in the north-west of England, with the Peak District National Park just an hour and ten minutes' drive from Chester, with endless walking trails and picturesque hills. Over on the coast, Formby beach is a similar distance from the city, where you can see Antony Gormley's iron people-shaped statues dotted along the miles of sand.

Eating and drinking

The Rows in Chester city centre are home to some lovely independent tearooms, set under the arches of these medieval shopping streets. You should also make sure to sample Cheshire cheese, which has a mild, creamy taste and a crumbly texture, while you're in the area. If you venture to nearby North Wales, a slice of the country's signature bake, Bara brith, is a must.

Things to do

Chester Zoo is located just outside of the city centre and is home to more than 500 different species of animals from around the world, including elephants, lions and tigers. A 20-minute drive away in Ellesmere Port, Blue Planet Aquarium houses some fascinating sea life. A particular highlight is the glass tunnel that you can walk through while sharks and sting rays swim above your head.

Sightseeing

Chester city centre is still surrounded by its original Roman walls, from which you can enjoy glorious views across the city and the River Dee. Partway along the walls you'll come to the Victorian clock tower that lies over the high street, before ending up at the ruins of an ancient Grade I-listed Roman amphitheatre, believed to date from the 1st century AD.
