Around 80 minutes' drive from Bolton is the Peak District village of Castleton, which was once the home of the miners of the Blue John Cavern. This underground network of caves was once full of the semi-precious mineral, with tours on offer to see the remnants of the sparkling rock in their original setting. If you're after another city to explore, Sheffield is around a 90-minute drive away.

Fellow Greater Manchester town Eccles (20 minutes from Bolton by car) is the home of the Eccles cake, a sweet bun made from currants and flaky pastry, and sold in bakeries throughout this part of the UK. Meanwhile, Bolton itself has a number of real ale pubs, wine bars and relaxed cafes where you can refuel after a busy day's exploring in your hire car.
