This underground network of caves was once full of the semi-precious mineral, with tours on offer to see the remnants of the sparkling rock in their original setting. If you're after another city to explore, Sheffield is around a 90-minute drive away.

Fellow Greater Manchester town Eccles (20 minutes from Bolton by car) is the home of the Eccles cake, a sweet bun made from currants and flaky pastry, and sold in bakeries throughout this part of the UK.
