Drive for just half an hour and you’ll find yourself in Basingstoke, where you’ll find attractions as varied as the 1208 Holy Ghost Cemetery and The Vyne, a Tudor building that inspired Jane Austen. Alternatively, Winchester is located 30 minutes’ away in a different direction and is most well-known for its imposing cathedral and the 17th-century Morley Library.

Longer drives

Further afield lie the enticing London and Brighton, but with your hire car they are certainly not out of reach. The capital has many fine things to recommend it, from museums and galleries to restaurants and theatres. Meanwhile, Brighton has its iconic pier and wonderful cultural attractions.

Eating and drinking

While you can get various types of food in Andover, it would be a shame not to try something local. Hampshire is known for rearing lamb and beef, while the indigenous edible plant is watercress. It was so well regarded that a special train route, known as the Watercress Line, was set up to take the crop to London. You won’t have to leave the county to give it a try.

Things to do

Andover Museum and the Museum of the Iron Age both offer interesting insights into the history of the area. If you’re keen to enjoy the beauty of nature in the vicinity and perhaps get a little active, then there are also options for this. Head to the Hawk Conservancy Trust to see these stunning birds or hop in a canoe at the Andover Leisure Centre.

Sightseeing

Imagine you are Lord and Lady Caernarfon at Highclere Castle, which was built in the Jacobean style, after having been designed by the famous architect Charles Barry. Be sure to check out the accompanying grounds, as they were laid out by eminent gardener Capability Brown and are just as impressive as you would expect.
