A drive along the Aegean coast makes for a beautiful road trip while you're in the area. Take a picnic of local mezze and pitch up by the ocean to enjoy it - you should be able to see across to the Greek islands if the weather is clear.

Nearby Bodrum

Gumbet is one of the most popular tourist areas in the Mugla province, which Bodrum is also a part of. Here, you'll find beautiful beaches, lively bars and relaxed beach restaurants in abundance. The resort is less than 15 minutes away from the centre of Bodrum by car.

Longer drives

The mud baths of Dalyan are famous all over the world for the rejuvenating effect they have on the skin. You can reach Dalaman, the home of the beautifying mud, in two hours and 45 minutes from Bodrum. For a livelier atmosphere, tourist hotspot Marmaris is a two hour and 20-minute drive away.

Eating and drinking

Sweet Turkish delight may be the nation's most famous delicacy, but the country is also well-known for its delicious baklava, as well as meat kofte and goulash. Traditional mezze is great for sharing with a group and means you get the chance to sample lots of different Turkish dishes.

Things to do

The Zeki Muren Arts Museum is a fascinating place to look around, having been the former home of Turkish classical music performer Zeki Muren. Watching the boats come in and out of the harbour is another great way to wile away a few hours, or you could hop aboard one for a ferry trip to nearby Kos.

Sightseeing

Bodrum is steeped in history and is the site of the Mauseoleum of Mausolus, which was built between 353 and 350 BC and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Bodrum Castle is also a popular tourist spot, dating from around 1402 and constructed by the Knights Templar.
