Car hire in Bangkok

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and often the first glimpse that visitors get of this fascinating nation. It is a lively city on the banks of the Chao Phraya River and is the most populous city in the country. There are several important roads close to Bangkok, with the most significant being Route 1, which will take you to the north and eventually the border with Burma.

Where to pick up my car

Collection is something you should think about right from the beginning when choosing a car hire deal, as each provider has its own locations. Some are in the city centre and others are further afield, while Bangkok Airport (BKK) is another option. Make sure you pick a place that will be convenient for you and make a note of it.

Where to go

Navigating Bangkok is a case of working out which districts you wish to visit. Each has its own identity and plenty to offer. The Old City is where you will find many of the headline sights you’ll want to tick off while in Bangkok, while Siam is great for shopping and Riverside is perfect for a leisurely stroll.

Nearby Bangkok

Just 50 minutes’ drive from Bangkok is Bang Krachao Island, nestled into a bend in the Chao Phraya River. It is a fantastic antidote to the city and all manner of activities, including cycling and kayaking are available. If you visit during the weekend, you’ll find a much quieter floating market than those that are held in Bangkok.

Longer drives

If you’re interested in history, then Ayutthaya should not be missed. This United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site lies just over an hour from Bangkok. It was once a thriving trade and political capital and the ruined temples that can be seen today provide a glimpse of culture in a different time. Other destinations worth exploring include the island of Phuket.

Eating and drinking

Thai food is famous throughout the world for being full of flavour and you will not find any shortage of places to enjoy it throughout Bangkok. As well as dining at restaurants, be sure to try little noodle stalls as well, as these sometimes have some of the best options. Among the dishes to try are som tum – a spicy green papaya salad – and green chicken curry.

Things to do

One of the fantastic things you might like to do in Bangkok is to tour the khlongs – or canals – in a traditional wooden boat. It’s a great way to see many of the sights and catch a glimpse of everyday life in Thailand. You should also experience the infamous Khao San Road, which is the centre of all things backpacker-related in Bangkok.

Sightseeing

The Grand Palace dates back to 1782 and is a magnificent piece of architecture, as well as home to the Thai King. It is instantly recognisable due to its traditional roof and is situated in a complex surrounded by temples and other religious buildings. Wat Arun – the Temple of Dawn – is a glittering masterpiece with an impressive central stupa, which you should also visit.
