Where to go

Basel is a deeply cultural city, boasting 40 museums - the most in any city in all of Switzerland. It also has a beautiful old town, where visitors can wander in the medieval streets before enjoying a meal by the Rhine. It’s not all tradition and history however, as the city is also home to some very modern architecture.

Nearby Basel

Basel is extremely near to the German border, and visitors can reach the city of Lorrach - which boasts Rotteln Castle and Rosenfels Park - in just 25 minutes (or 17.7km) by road. France is equally close, meaning tourists can take a trip to the large city of Mulhouse, famed for its museums, in 36 minutes by car. It is a mere 37km away.

Longer drives

A slightly longer drive will take you to the iconic Swiss city of Zurich - a global centre for banking and finance. Zurich is 87.4km away from Basel, and the drive there will take approximately 1.25 hours. A trip to the Swiss capital of Bern will take the same amount of time via the A2 and A1, but is 101km away.

Eating and drinking

From Basel, there are many authentic national cuisines on your doorstep. In a half hour drive you can be in France, sampling escargot and boeuf bourguignon, while 30 minutes the other way you could be indulging in the meat-heavy dishes of Germany. Switzerland itself is famed for its cheese fondues.

Things to do

With such a wide selection of museums in Basel, visitors are spoilt for choice. There is the internationally-renowned Basel Art Museum, the Museum of Cultures and the Fondation Beyeler, which boasts an incredible and unique art collection. The city is also home to many theatrical productions, as well as the chamber orchestra and the symphony orchestra, making for numerous cultural opportunities.

Sightseeing

As Switzerland’s oldest university town, there are plenty of landmarks in Basel, including the large market square and gothic cathedral. Nearby, Augusta Raurica offers up roman ruins and a fascinating museum, to give visitors a glimpse into the region’s past.
