Car hire in Stockholm

Hiring a car in Stockholm

Stockholm has everything you could possibly want from a holiday destination, even if it might not be the place you first think of visiting. Known as the Venice of the North, the city is located on peninsulas and islands that create the perfect mix of land and water, resulting in a wonderfully picturesque setting.

With a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, great historic locations, beautiful woodlands and coastal towns close by, Stockholm is sure to capture your heart and imagination in no time at all. Driving in the city and elsewhere in Sweden is also a delight, as roads are rarely as congested as you'll find them throughout many other countries. Just be aware of cyclists, as Stockholm has a good network of bike lanes.

What you need to know

Because driving is so easy while in Stockholm, hiring a car is a great way to see as much of the city as possible. Luckily, there are a good number of car rental companies for you to choose from, with around 10 different options available depending on where you want to collect your car from.

Most of the companies available in Stockholm are rated as 'Excellent', so you know you'll get the best possible service. If you hire through Holiday Autos' booking tool, you'll have even greater peace of mind as we offer free cancellation and amendments, as well as 24/7 support. You also don't need to worry about paying card fees when booking through us.

Where to pick up your car

You've got a few different options when it comes to picking up your hire car, allowing you to choose the most convenient.

Stockholm has two airports, both of which offer hire car collection. Those flying into Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) will find the car hire desks in a few different areas depending on which company you've booked with. Most are located in the airport's designated car rental area, which is well signposted, while others can be found in Terminal Two.

You can also pick up your hire car if you're arriving at Stockholm Bromma Airport (BMA). Here the car hire desks are in the arrivals hall of the terminal so you can just collect your luggage and go. Alternatively, you can arrange to pick up your hire car at Stockholm Train Station.

Where to go

Stockholm is home to wonderful natural landscapes that seem to work perfectly with the built-up areas of the city. Set out to explore stunning green forests and crystal clear lakes, or make your way to ancient castles that look like something out of a fairytale. Learn about the interesting history of the city and surrounding area by going to any of the world-class museums and enjoy some art at one of the many galleries.

You can also travel further afield, either by car or by boat, to see what other great towns are in the region or what the other islands in the archipelago hold. There will never be a dull moment while you're visiting Stockholm, especially if you make the most of your hire car.

Nearby Stockholm

While it may seem slightly odd to you to visit a graveyard while on holiday, Skogskyrkogården is very much worth the ten-minute trip from Stockholm's centre via Route 73. The Modernist Enskede Woodland Cemetery is a really beautiful site and perfectly reflects the themes of life, death and nature that are present in Nordic philosophy. The cemetery was created by Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz - both modernist architects - and offers stunning little chapels and a visitors’ centre, as well as wonderful views.

For a bit of history, head to the Fortress of Vaxholm, which is the largest museum in the archipelago. You can be at the museum in as little as 40 minutes if you take the E18 and Route 274, and the journey will be well worth it. The fortress was rebuilt in 1838, after which time it could no longer be used by the military as it was unable to stand against modern artillery. However, it is now home to a huge range of exhibits from the time it was used as a fortress, which are great for getting insight into Stockholm's history.

Longer drives

Stockholm is within driving distance of Sweden's first town, so you should definitely consider a day trip to Sigtuna. Originally founded in 980 AD, Sigtuna has been standing since the final century of the Viking era, offering you a chance to step back in time. Sitting on the shore of Lake Mälaren, the wonderfully picturesque town is the site of beautiful medieval churches, rune stones and other ruins. You'll also find boutique shops and little cafes that add a quaint yet modern touch.

Step into the pages of a fairytale by driving an hour along the E20 to the imposing Gripsholm Castle. This medieval structure is incredibly beautiful and offers you a chance to take in 400 years of Sweden's history. Often known as Gustav Vasa's castle, Gripsholm was built in 1537 on the shores of Lake Mälaren. It now houses the Swedish State's portrait collection, which includes a number of famous faces.

Top attractions to visit in Stockholm

The wonderful Swedish city of Stockholm is unlike anywhere else in the world, so make sure you see as much of it and the archipelago during your visit. Hiring a car will enable you to get around with ease, giving you more chances to see some top attractions.

Gamla Stan

Stockholm's old town - or Gamla Stan - dates from the 1200s and is the perfect destination for a day of wandering around. The colourful streets are packed with cafes, shops and some of the best restaurants; as well as great historic attractions. Walking through Gamla Stan will allow you to really sink into the atmosphere of Stockholm, while the winding streets offer all sorts of treasures for you to discover.

The Royal Palace

You really can't visit Stockholm without at least stopping briefly at the Royal Palace, although a long exploration will be a much better idea as there is so much to see. The palace is on the water's edge close to Gamla Stan and is the official residence of the King of Sweden. The vast building has more than 600 rooms and houses five museums, meaning you could spend a day soaking in the history if you wanted to.

Skansen Open-air Museum

A very different way of taking in the history of Stockholm and Sweden, Skansen is the oldest open-air museum in the world. You'll find the museum on the island of Djurgården, with the location being the perfect destination during the summer months. As well as Stockholm Zoo, the museum features over 150 different buildings that were collected from all over the country and rehomed here.
