Car hire at Tenerife South Airport

Tenerife South Airport (TFS) is the larger of the two international airports serving the Spanish island of Tenerife - the largest of the Canary Islands. Located near the southern tip of the island and overlooked by Mount Teide, it is not only a scenic location, but an ideal starting point for exploring the quieter side of the island.

What I need to know

There are several Tenerife South Airport car hire providers and with Holiday Autos you can find the best deal. As well as finding a great deal on car hire at Tenerife South Airport, you can enjoy 24-hour customer service and free cancellation, all with no booking fees.

Where to pick up my car

Tenerife Airport's car hire firms are located in the terminal building or the car parking area outside it. The terminal is served by buses running from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and various other locations on the island. There is also a dedicated area for hire car parking.

Car Hire Reviews Tenerife South Airport

  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go

Tenerife is a spectacular volcanic island and while many will come for the sunshine and beaches, there is lots of natural scenery to explore. Try walking up one of the paths to the top of Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain, or get the cable car. There is also diving to enjoy and many historic towns to explore.

Nearby Tenerife South Airport

The southern end of the island is closer to Mount Teide, with several mountain roads to shorten the ascent of the 3,718 metre high dormant volcano. Another great mountain drive is to Masca (45 minutes), a mountain village only accessible by road since the 1970s.

Longer drives

For those keen on experiencing the nightlife, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is just over 40 minutes away, while the popular resort of Garachio - which was buried when Teide erupted in 1706 and now features wonderful rock pools cut from the lava - is just over an hour away.

Eating and drinking

Tenerife is a great place to enjoy local seafood and, of course, Spanish cuisine in general. Apart from familiar dishes like Paella, local specialities include pan-fried fish, pollo al salmorejo and rancho canario soup. Canarian bananas grow locally and can be eaten raw or fried, while the island produces some wonderful honey.

Things to do

Tenerife offers lots of great aquatic activities, with whale-watching and scuba diving among them. The big towns offer lively nightlife, while families can enjoy theme parks such as Loro Park. Located just over an hour's drive from the airport, it features the world's largest collection of parrots, plus dolphins, orcas and sea lions.

Sightseeing

Among the natural wonders to enjoy are the volcanic tunnels of Cueva del Viento, which feature spectacular underground formations and can be explored through guided tours. The island's former capital of La Laguna is 50 minutes away from the airport and is a Unesco World Heritage Site with its many historic buildings constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries.
