Car Hire Reviews Mahon Airport

  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go

The most striking thing about Mahon is its huge sweeping harbour, which is the biggest natural port in Europe. It is backed by a bustling city, which still shows the influence of 18th-century British colonialists in the decoration of the houses. Explore this whole area with ease in your hire car.

Nearby Mahon Airport

Less than half an hour’s drive from Mahon Airport is the small village of Santo Tomas and its accompanying beach. It’s a great place to relax and unwind with the family and few distractions. Even closer is the fishing village of Binibeca, which, complete with whitewashed houses and cobbled streets, is particularly picturesque.

Longer drives

At the other end of the island, but still just 45 minutes away in your hire car, is Ciutadella. Having been the capital of Menorca up until the 18thcentury, it has all the grandeur and history you would expect. Take in the old churches, palaces and outdoor cafes of the old town, before enjoying one of the nearby beaches. Alternatively, you could catch a ferry to the neighbouring island of Majorca.

Eating and drinking

Despite mayonnaise reportedly having been invented in Mahon, there are plenty of other local delicacies to enjoy. The island produces its own pork, olive oil, almonds and cheese, so look out for these ingredients in dishes. The harbourside in Mahon has a wide selection of restaurants to choose from and being an island, Menorca also has a plentiful supply of fish.

Things to do

One of the main draws of a holiday in Menorca is taking the family to the beach and there are a number of great stretches of sand near Mahon. Throw all your beach stuff into your hire car and head to the likes of Punta Prima, Es Grau or Alcaufar beaches. As well as swimming and sunbathing, there are also watersports available at some of these locations.

Sightseeing

It’s hard not to notice Fortalleza de la Mola, as the huge 19th-century fort dominates the harbour in Mahon. Wander its defensive walls, explore the military prison and discover the galleries that lie below. Plan your visit to coincide with the sun going down and you’ll be able to see the beautiful colours reflected in the sea.
