Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands, off the coast of West Africa in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Hiring a car gives you the freedom to travel across the island with ease and see everything that it has to offer.

The main road in Lanzarote is the LZ-1, which begins in Orzola and goes down the east coast of the island to reach Arrecife. Here it becomes the LZ-2, which then carries on down to Playa Blanca on the south coast.

Where to go

Lanzarote is well-known for the stunning weather it enjoys most of the year, making it even more popular as a tourist destination. The main tourist resorts tend to be Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen, although the island has many other beautiful places that you won't want to miss out on.

Lanzarote boasts amazing volcanic scenery, which were forged following six years of volcanic eruptions in the 1730s, which left much of the island submerged in solid lava.

The area is also a hub for culture, with a number of museums exploring the history and art of Lanzarote. Some of the most popular include the Museum of International and Contemporary Art and the Museo del Tanit.

Nearby Lanzarote

A really popular destination for tourists is Costa Teguise, which is just a 15 minute drive from the airport. There's so much to see and do here, with some of the most popular activities being water sports on the beaches, the stunning golf course and the fun-filled water park.

You could also head to Puerto del Carmen, which is just ten minutes west of the airport. The 6km stretches of beach are undeniably some of the island's most popular, while the shopping on offer is perfect for anyone looking for some retail therapy.

Longer drives

Just 30 minutes south of the airport is Playa Blanca, another popular tourist destination. This area is perfect for those looking for a relaxed holiday, with all of the amenities nearby that you could dream of.

What was once a small fishing village has been transformed over the last decade, now offering a stunning destination that's well-known for its beautiful marina. From here you can catch a ferry over to the island of Fuerteventura, giving you the chance to explore even more of the stunning Canaries.

Half an hour north of the airport is Mancha Blanca, a small village on the border of Timanfaya National Park. Here you can find the Centro de Visitantes e Interpretación, the museum dedicated to the nearby volcanoes. Interestingly, the museum itself sits in the middle of the lava fields, with much of it underground.

Top attractions to visit in Lanzarote

Explore the entire island of Lanzarote with ease now that you've arranged a hire car for your trip, including some of the many attractions it has on offer.

Eating and drinking

The food in Lanzarote has Spanish, African and Latin American influences. Perhaps surprisingly though, fish isn't favoured here, although meat is hugely popular. However, it's still very easy to sample much of the freshly caught fish in the restaurants. Goat and rabbit also feature in many dishes, with baby kid being a local delicacy.

Tapas dishes are a regular occurrence, with local favourites being papas arrugadas, puchero, gambas al ajillo and gofio.

You'll find that the different resorts offer different atmospheres in the evenings. The quietest of the main tourist destinations is Playa Blanca, while Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise have large areas with a variety of bars and clubs.

Things to do

Markets are hugely popular in Lanzarote, with the Teguise Market on Sundays being one of the biggest. Hundreds of stalls sell almost anything, from handmade goods to clothes and even timples (a small Canarian guitar).

There are also a number of much smaller markets in places such as Haria, Arrecife and Mancha Blanca, where you can browse through the local produce, arts and crafts on offer.

For such a small island, Lanzarote has a great choice of museums and galleries where you can learn about its history and culture. Some of the most popular include the Museum of International Contemporary Art, LagOmar and El Grifo Wine Museum.

Sightseeing

There truly is so much to see in Lanzarote. Cueva de Los Verdes shouldn't be missed, being one of the longest volcanic tunnels in the world. Around 2km of the tunnels are open to the public, showing this phenomenal act of nature.

One of the most popular sights is the Volcano Park at Timanfaya National Park. This unique landscape is home to a number of colourful dormant volcanoes, surrounded by the solid lava left from eruptions that took place hundreds of years ago.

Of course, you can't forget about the beaches. Lanzarote boasts 93 beautiful beaches, ranging from the larger and lively coastal areas in the main tourist resorts, to much smaller hidden gems that can be the perfect hideaway.
