Car Hire Reviews La Gomera

  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go inland

The island is famous for its barrancos, volcanic valleys that are irrigated by water flowing down from the mountains to help grow vineyards, bananas and other fruit. The Parque Nacional de Garajonay is one of the most stunning national parks in Spain and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Around the coast of La Gomera

Coastal attractions include the wonderful beach at Valle Gran Rey, where fire dancing takes place around the La Playa area at sunset. There are many opportunities to go whale watching and go walking in the forests of the Parque Natural Majona, while several of the beaches feature black volcanic sand.

Longer drives

Visitors can take a ferry to [Tenerife close square brackets (/car-hire/tenerifeairport) from San Sebastian or Valle Gran Rey and hire a car there, with the opportunity to enjoy the larger island's many features, from the mountainous wonder of Mount Teide and the rock pools of Garachio to the nightlife of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Eating and drinking

The island is great for fans of cheese and wine. There are some distinctive local wines and these can be enjoyed with local cheeses - or a cheese spread such as almogrote - as well as meats like pork or goat. Desserts should be tried with miel de palma, a syrup that is produced from palm trees.

Things to do

The island is superb for hiking, with its many high mountains and wonderful views. The highest peak is Alto de Garajonay at 1,487 metres, one of eight mountains that rise to over 1,000 metres above sea level. Another thing to do is learn about El Silbo, a whistling language unique to the island.

Sightseeing

One of the finest views on the island can be found at The Mirador de Abrante restaurant and viewpoint, which towers over the coastal village of Agulo and includes a glass-floored 'Sky Walk'. For some history, visit the house in San Sebastian where Christopher Columbus is said to have stayed before setting off to discover the Americas.
