Where to go

Johannesburg is one of South Africa’s largest city and considering it is a mere 20-minute drive away from the airport, many tourists will seize the opportunity to have a taste of the country’s vibrant heart.

Nearby Johannesburg Airport

Less than an hour’s drive north out of Johannesburg Airport is the handsome and gracious Pretoria. Before you reach this city though, you’ll drive through the relaxing getaway town of Magaliesburg.

For a taste of rural South African life, you could head to the small farming town of Bethal, which produces maize, sunflower seed, rye and potatoes.

Longer drives

Driving to Kruger National Park, just under 400 km away from Johannesburg Airport, may be too demanding for some, but those who do make the drive can enjoy a unique safari tour.

The city of Rustenburg is a 171 km drive away and sits at the foot of the Magaliesberg mountain range.

Eating and drinking

You’ll have the chance to taste some amazing and unique food during your time in South Africa. Traditional African dishes to try include Cape Malay curry and Malva pudding - the country’s answer to sticky toffee pudding. South Africa is also famed for its wine. We’d recommend trying Pinotage while you’re here. It’s a cross between Pinot noir and Cinsaut.

Things to do

Johannesburg is blessed with many beautiful parks, most notably Johannesburg Botanical Gardens and Emmarentia Dam, James and Ethel Grey Park and Delta Park.

You could also take a cycle tour through the streets of iconic Soweto or soak up the hipster-friendly atmosphere of the urban neighbourhood of Maboneng.

Sightseeing

Visiting Johannesburg’s Apartheid Museum is a very moving and humbling experience and one of the country’s must-see attractions. It’s also worth dropping by the South African National Museum of Military History, the Origins Centre Museum, the Wondercave and Johannesburg Zoo. For some retail therapy, head to the Mall of Rosebank.
