Car Hire Reviews Durban

  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go

Some travellers to South Africa often head to larger, more well-known cities like Cape Town or Johannesburg but Durban - or eThekweni as it is also known as in Zulu - has much to offer.

As it is based by the sea, there is a gorgeous waterfront promenade that offers magnificent views. Additionally, there’s uShaka Marine World, which has one of the largest aquariums in the world, while Durban’s Markets of Warwick are believed to be the largest informal street market in South Africa. There’s also the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium, which hosted part of the 2010 Football World Cup.

Nearby Durban

Driving south out of Durban down the 2 highway, which runs along the east coast, will bring you to Amanzimtoti, Kingsburgh, Scotsburgh and the small coastal resort of Ifafa Beach. Looking north up the coast, you’ll find Dolphin Coast, Umhlanga and the Amatikulu Nature Reserve.

Longer drives

The 568km drive from Durban to Johannesburg may prove too much for most drivers, demanding almost six hours at the wheel each way. Instead, if you really fancied a road trip, you could consider heading to the town of Richards Bay or Mtunzini.

Eating and drinking

Durban is blessed with more than a thousand restaurants, but you’ll also be able to pick up fantastic Indian food and traditional African meals from markets and street vendors. Thanks to Durban's coastal location, there is also plenty of opportunity to taste some exceedingly fresh seafood.

Things to do

Durban and its surrounding region has more than its fair share of varied wildlife and this is reflected with the Umgeni River Bird Park, which features more than 800 birds over 3.5 hectares of land.

As you’re by the sea, there are also plenty of beaches, so if you fancy soaking up some rays, North Beach is a good call.

Sightseeing

The biggest Hare Krishna temple in the southern hemisphere, the Temple of Understanding, is located in Durban. With an unusual design, the building is incredibly photogenic and will make for a great backdrop to your holiday snaps.

We’d also recommend the Durban Botanic Gardens, which is home to some rare species of plant.
