Where to go

Known as eThekweni in Zulu, Durban has a lot to offer, even if the city is often overlooked for other locations in this region of the country. As well as everything you would expect from a city, Durban also has a stunning waterfront promenade that offers views. You'll also find an explosion of Indian culture throughout the city that is worth embracing.

Once you have your car, you can drive the 30 or so minutes from the airport straight into the city of Durban. Here you'll find the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium, which was where the 2010 World Cup took place. You can also make the most of its coastal location by visiting uShaka Marine World, which has one of the largest aquariums in the world.

Longer drives

Little more than an hour away via the N2 and N3 is the city of Pietermaritzburg. Here you'll find a huge range of historic and grand buildings, many of which are now fantastic museums. It also has a brilliant mix of cultures that makes Pietermaritzburg so interesting and dynamic.

Eating and drinking

There are more than a thousand restaurants in and around Durban, including a great range of cuisines. From fantastic Indian food from markets, street vendors and restaurants, to traditional African meals, you'll find a lot of delicious options. Durban's location on the coast also means there is plenty of fresh seafood.

Things to do

To enjoy more of the varied wildlife in Durban, take a trip to the Umgeni River Bird Park. Covering 3.5 hectares of land, there are more than 800 birds to see and learn about, some of which you can get up close to.

For a chance to soak up the sun, head to North Beach. Here you can sunbathe, swim and try your hand at surfing, while restaurants and shops are nearby.

Sightseeing

Durban is home to the biggest Hare Krishna temple in the southern hemisphere, the Temple of Understanding. The building has an unusual design that is incredibly photogenic. You'll also find a fantastic vegetarian restaurant on site.

The Durban Botanic Gardens are also worth a visit, especially as it houses some rare species of plant. You may be lucky enough to visit when one of the concerts is happening in the gardens.
