Cape Town International Airport (CPT) is the second busiest airport in South Africa and it has been voted Africa’s best airport five times between 2009 and 2013. It is located around 20 km out from the city centre and very accessible with it being connected to the N2 freeway. This is the longest numbered route in South Africa, measuring 1,401 miles. Heading east on this road will take you to many major towns and cities including Durban, Somerset West, Caledon, and Swellendam before ending in Ermelo.

Where to go

Heading straight to the port city of Cape Town is a wise move. It is the most popular tourist destination in all of Africa, thanks to its inviting climate, natural setting and well-developed environment. Having a hire car means you’ll be able to drive to Cape Town’s many beautiful beaches, such as Boulders Beach, Camp’s Bay Beach and Bloubergstrand Beach.

Nearby Cape Town International Airport

Cape Town car hire is definitely worthwhile due to being surrounded by a lot of natural beauty, with six nature reserves and mountain areas just an hour’s drive away from the airport. Heading east down the N2 freeway will bring you to the Jonkershoek, Groenlandberg and Hottentots Holland nature reserves.

Taking the R44 and venturing south takes you to the Kogelberg nature reserve and Hottentots-Holland mountain catchment area, as well as the quaint coastal town of Pringle Bay.

Longer drives

Under 90 minutes away is Hermanus on the south coast, which is famous for its southern right whale watching, breathtaking scenery, upmarket shops and Grotto Beach - one of South Africa’s most striking stretches of sand.

Just under two hours from the airport is Gansbaai - a quaint fishing town popular for cage diving with great white sharks and whale-watchers.

Eating and drinking

There are some amazing and unique dishes that you must try during your time in Cape Town. Biltong - the national snack of South Africa - is a form of jerky and you’ll see it in most places. It consists of dried meat, cured in vinegar and spices, and it is truly addictive.

Also look out for boerewors - South Africa’s national sausage - and sosaties - Cape Town’s take on the kebab.

Things to do

If you plan on exploring Cape Town itself, it is worth making a point of visiting Bay Harbour Market, which pulls together more than 100 traders, overlooking Chapman’s Peak at the foot of Hangberg Mountain.

You could also take a tour around Cape Town Stadium or ride the Cape Wheel, which offers great views of the waterfront.

Sightseeing

Sights in Cape Town don’t get much better than when you’re riding the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, which offers views over Cape Town, Table Bay and Robben Island to the north, and the Atlantic seaboard to the west and south from 2,510 ft up.

It’s worth making the effort to get over to Robben Island too, which sits almost 7 km off the west coast off Cape Town. Nelson Mandela was imprisoned here for 18 of the 27 years he served behind bars before the fall of apartheid. Tours around the former jail take place every day.
