Where to go

The city is famous for the many bridges over the Ljubljanica river, which is split into two channels by the Gruber Canal to form an island in the city centre. On this island sits Ljubljana Castle, sitting on the island. The huge Tivoli Park is a wonderful green 'lung' for the city.

Nearby Ljubljana

The outskirts of the city offer great exercise for those who like walking, with the mountains of Grmada and Mount St May both being over 650 ft in height. They are situated on the northern edge of the city. Krajinsky Park lies just outside the south-western edge of the city.

Longer drives

From Ljublana it takes an hour-and-a half to reach Slovenia's second city of Maribor. For those crossing borders, Croatia's capital Zagreb is just under two hours away, Trieste in Italy is just over an hour away and Venice two-and-a-half hours away.

Eating and drinking

Traditional Slovenian food includes a lot of pork, turkey and chicken stews like goulash, similarly to nearby countries like Austria and Hungary. Pancakes are also popular and Naos is one of many fine cheeses. Slovenia produces several varieties of wine and other local drinks include ganje, a strong brandy made with local fruit.

Things to do

While the mountains on its fringe offer a great view, an easy way to get high is to hop in a lift up Neboticnik, the 70-metre high tower block in the heart of the city, which provides a vista across town. Ride on the funicular railway to the castle or enjoy a romantic boat trip on the river.

Sightseeing

Check out the many bridges over the river and canal, including the Dragon Bridge, the Triple Bridge, Butcher's Bridge and Trnovo Bridge. Those who enjoy architecture should check out the Baroque Town Hall and Ljubljana Cathedral with its twin domes, as well as Republic Square, the largest square in the city.
