Car hire in Luz

Luz, or Praia da Luz to give it its full name, is a seaside resort in the Algarve. Located on the most popular coast in Portugal, it has long been a tourist haunt, famed both for its beaches and also for the region's many golf courses. It makes an excellent base to explore the region.

What I need to know

There are many Luz car hire firms. Using the Holiday Autos tracker, we can help you find the best car hire services in Luz, as well as guarantee no fees for card booking or cancellation. With 24-hour customer service, you can be sure of getting on the road swiftly and easily.

Where to pick up my car

Car hire services can be found mainly in two Luz locations, these being in the village of Lagos and around Portimao. Both roads are near the N125 and A22 motorway. Those picking up a car from an airport car hire firm can pick one up at the terminal of Faro Airport (FAO).

  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go

Many will simply opt for the beach, but Luz features some fascinating historic aspects. The ruins of the Roman Baths lie close to the main street, and the 15th-century walls of Lagos are also well preserved, with these enclosing cobbled squares and streets, as well as a weekly fish market.

Nearby Luz

The South-East Atlantic Coast Natural Park is located just west of Luz, stretching a few miles along the south coast before reaching the southernmost point in Portugal at Sagres, with the historic Fortaleza des Sagres at the end of the peninsula. To the east lie the coastal resorts of Albufeira and Vilamoura.

Longer drives

From Luz, it takes just under three hours to drive north to the historic and beautiful capital city of Lisbon and five hours to reach Porto, famous for its Port wine. The picturesque Vale do Guadiana Natural Park is around two hours away to the north-east.

Eating and drinking

Portuguese food is typically southern European and includes plenty of fish, spices and poultry. These include the cow's feet and chickpea stew mao de vaca com grao, and alheira, a sausage fried with an egg. Port is the most famous Portuguese wine, but it is just one of many varieties.

Things to do

Luz is a great place to enjoy some watersports, with surfing, boating and sea swimming to try, as well as water parks in places like Lagos. Take the children to Lagos Zoo with its wide variety of animals, or play a round at one of the many fine new golf courses in the region.

Sightseeing

The Roman Baths are open from 10 to 5 each day and these join the Lagos walls and Fortaleza des Sagres in offering plenty of history. The scenic coastline of the South-West Coast Natural Park also features the lighthouse at the tip of Cabo Sao Vicente.
