Where to go

The city of Oslo seems to melt perfectly into the natural landscape that surrounds it. As well as having a thriving cultural scene, it has a large selection of green spaces and a redeveloped waterfront area. Being surrounded by hills, forests and lakes, you’re never far away from the great outdoors.

Jessheim is even closer to Oslo Airport than Oslo itself, at less than ten minutes’ drive away. It has a huge shopping centre, which makes it a good place to stock up on souvenirs before returning your hire car to the airport. To the west of Jessheim, you will find Raknehaugen, an old royal burial ground dating back to between 533AD and 551AD.

Longer drives

A drive to Hamar, which sits on the banks of the Mjosa Lake, should take little over an hour and will reward you with rich cultural experiences. The city is not huge, but lies within a very traditional part of Norway. The Hedmarksmuseet is a beautiful museum and offers a fascinating insight into life in Viking times right up to the present day. Oslo is also not far from the border with Sweden, so you could even venture to Gothenburg.

As a capital city, it is not surprising that there is lots of choice when it comes to restaurants with cuisines from all over the world represented. Be sure to sample some typical Norwegian food during your stay as well. This could be anything from reindeer or fish to the krumkaker pastry.

Things to do

Hiking and cycling, skiing and kayaking are all easily arranged from Oslo and you’ll find the scenery absolutely breathtaking while carrying out these activities. In the city, it is worth visiting at least one of the impressive art galleries and checking out a performance at the opera house.

Sightseeing

There are plenty of sights for history buffs in Oslo, with Akershus Fortress and the Viking Ship Museum ticking that box. To enjoy some art outside of the confines of a gallery, head to the Vigeland Sculpture Park, where you’ll find more than 200 exhibits cast from granite, bronze and iron.
