Where to pick up your car

Take your time to decide whether you want to indulge in the wonderful coffee shops and restaurants around the city or whether you prefer to see some of the wonderful natural sites dotted around outer Bergen, and then head off to your own perfect location.

Nearby Bergen

You don't need to be travelling too far from Bergen to see the best of what the area has to offer. It's one of the most picturesque areas of the country, and simply hitting the road and soaking up the surrounding scenery can be all it takes to make for a perfect day. If you do want to travel to somewhere nearby, there's also so much to see and do, such as Voss, just 90 minutes from Bergen. This village offers some magically contrasting things to do. From the traditional little rural village that is just so perfect to walk through, to the adrenaline rush of hitting the mountains for rafting, kayaking, canyoning, river-boarding, cross-country skiing, paragliding and sky-diving, this is the perfect place for a day away from Bergen.

Alternatively, take the drive north half an hour to the area of Biskopshavn. Although still a part of Bergen, this feels like a long way from the city itself. With a beautiful church sitting atop the hill and some of the most fantastic views out across the sea, this is really the best place to see something serene and calm within easy driving distance from Bergen.

Longer drives

When you travel to Bergen, there's plenty to see and do in the city itself, as well as on drives further afield. If you look in Bergen itself, however, you can find some of the most spectacular attractions around.

Funicular railway

There's nothing quite like seeing Bergen from above, and heading upwards on the funicular railway allows you the sort of unrivalled views that will leave you open mouthed for some time after. From the top of the 320m Mount Floyen, you can see across the whole city, as well as embarking on some excellent hikes into the forest. It really is the best way to see what natural Norway has to offer.

Museums and galleries

Like few other cities, Bergen is home to a fantastic mix of both the modern world and the history of the country of Norway, and it's a great place to see both at once. You can do this with visits to museums that explore things such as modern art and the history of the country. Look towards the likes of KODE 3, home to Edvard Munch works and Storsenter, which allows you to look back through the history of the city and has many great exhibits on show.

Bryggen

Of course, scenery and history are two of the main reasons that people will come to Bergen, and there's few places better for seeing what is on offer in this regard than in Bryggen, the oldest quarter of the city. Take a stroll along the harbour and drink in the ambience of the stone-built structures, or wander through the 13th century wooden streets, where you can find arts, crafts and small boutique shops that are perfect tourist fodder.
