Car hire in Bergen

Hiring a car in Bergen

It may not be the most well known city in Norway, but Bergen is without doubt one of the most quintessentially Norwegian places the country has to offer. A UNESCO world heritage site, Bergen is home to a cultural world that fits perfectly with modern Europe, sitting alongside some of the most enticing natural landscapes and brilliant historical locations. In short, Bergen has everything you could ever want from a Nordic holiday.

Whether you want to indulge in the local food, explore the past of Bergen or take a walk through what it means to be Scandinavian in the modern world, or even take a hike through the most perfect natural setting, you will find somewhere and something that meets your needs and provides you with the most perfect holiday location in the world.

What you need to know

Bergen has so much to do that not having a car to hand would mean missing out on some of the fantastic things it has to see. If you are trying to do it all by taxi or public transport, you're sure to miss out on the natural beauty or history that could really make your holiday one that you'll remember forever. In winter, parts of Bergen can see temperatures fall below -5C, and with only six hours of sunlight at this time of year, it makes sense to use a car to get around Bergen when visiting on holiday.

When you are coming to Bergen, your best option is to book a hire car in advance with Holiday Autos. Booking in advance means that you can get the very best deals around, and our easy booking tool means it is simple to compare prices and find the very best car for you, all without any hassle at all.

Where to pick up your car

When you fly into Bergen Airport (BGO), you'll be able to find the car hire desks for five of the biggest car hire companies located just inside the terminal. From here, you will be able to collect your keys and be on the roads within a few minutes, getting to grips with all that Bergen has to offer.

If your car hire company does not have a location within Bergen Airport itself, then most have sites just a short distance from the airport. You can take a taxi around 1km from the airport and you will be able to find most of the car hire companies that do not operate in the airport itself here, making it easy to pick up your car.

Where to go

Once you've got your car keys and you're on the road, all that remains is to choose what you want to do in Bergen. Take your time to decide whether you want to indulge in the wonderful coffee shops and restaurants around the city or whether you prefer to see some of the wonderful natural sites dotted around outer Bergen, and then head off to your own perfect location.

Nearby Bergen

You don't need to be travelling too far from Bergen to see the best of what the area has to offer. It's one of the most picturesque areas of the country, and simply hitting the road and soaking up the surrounding scenery can be all it takes to make for a perfect day. If you do want to travel to somewhere nearby, there's also so much to see and do, such as Voss, just 90 minutes from Bergen. This village offers some magically contrasting things to do. From the traditional little rural village that is just so perfect to walk through, to the adrenaline rush of hitting the mountains for rafting, kayaking, canyoning, river-boarding, cross-country skiing, paragliding and sky-diving, this is the perfect place for a day away from Bergen.

Alternatively, take the drive north half an hour to the area of Biskopshavn. Although still a part of Bergen, this feels like a long way from the city itself. With a beautiful church sitting atop the hill and some of the most fantastic views out across the sea, this is really the best place to see something serene and calm within easy driving distance from Bergen.

Longer drives

Hiring a car from Bergen, of course, unlocks the possibility to see so much more of what the country of Norway has to offer, and allows you the chance to travel to see some fantastic sights. For example, you can take the road to Sognefjord. While the town at the end of your drive will be somewhat picturesque and attractive, it's the drive itself that really makes this an ideal trip. A three and a half hour trip, this will take you past mountains, forests and freezing waterfalls, making for the most idyllic drive you can find anywhere in the world. It really has to be seen to be believed.

Located just a little closer to Bergen, around two and a half hours from the city, is Hardangerfjord. This is the perfect place for any tourist to visit in Norway. The glacier here is ideal for everyone who visits, while there are also waterfalls, and the amazing Troll's Tongue Rock, protruding from the mountain and making for one of the most spectacular places in the world to snap a picture; get your Instagram app at the ready.

Top attractions to visit in Bergen

When you travel to Bergen, there's plenty to see and do in the city itself, as well as on drives further afield. If you look in Bergen itself, however, you can find some of the most spectacular attractions around.

Funicular railway

There's nothing quite like seeing Bergen from above, and heading upwards on the funicular railway allows you the sort of unrivalled views that will leave you open mouthed for some time after. From the top of the 320m Mount Floyen, you can see across the whole city, as well as embarking on some excellent hikes into the forest. It really is the best way to see what natural Norway has to offer.

Museums and galleries

Like few other cities, Bergen is home to a fantastic mix of both the modern world and the history of the country of Norway, and it's a great place to see both at once. You can do this with visits to museums that explore things such as modern art and the history of the country. Look towards the likes of KODE 3, home to Edvard Munch works and Storsenter, which allows you to look back through the history of the city and has many great exhibits on show.

Bryggen

Of course, scenery and history are two of the main reasons that people will come to Bergen, and there's few places better for seeing what is on offer in this regard than in Bryggen, the oldest quarter of the city. Take a stroll along the harbour and drink in the ambience of the stone-built structures, or wander through the 13th century wooden streets, where you can find arts, crafts and small boutique shops that are perfect tourist fodder.
