Longer drives
Rotterdam is around a 40-minute drive from Schiphol Airport. Here, you'll be able to see some of the Netherlands' iconic windmills, as well as the Euromast observation tower, which offers breathtaking views across the surrounding area. The capital of south Holland, the Hague, can be reached by car in 35 minutes.
Eating and drinking
Make sure to try some traditional Dutch cuisine at one of Amsterdam's many eateries during your visit. Classic dishes include stroopwafel, which are a sweet delicacy somewhere between a waffle and a cookie, as well as pancakes and smoky sausages (Rookworst). Holland's signature cheese is Edam, characterised by its nutty taste and holey appearance.
Things to do
The Anne Frank Museum can be a very moving place to visit. It is located in the house where she went into hiding with her family during the Second World War and draws on passages from her famous diary to build the story of her life. You could also hire a bike and cycle along Amsterdam's many canals for a quaint Dutch experience.
Sightseeing
Few sights are more awe-inspiring than masterpieces of art and Amsterdam is home to several. The Van Gogh Museum houses many works by the artist and his contemporaries, including Self-Portrait, Gauguin's Chair and the much-loved Sunflowers. The nearby Rijksmuseum also houses art and artefacts celebrating Dutch culture from the medieval period to the present day.
