Car hire at Marrakech airport

Car hire at Marrakech airport

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is an international hub serving not only Marrakech, but also the entire Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz region of Morocco. It is located around six km from the city centre via Rue Ibn Khaldoun and Boulevard Al Yarmouk and is the perfect base from which to explore this fascinating area.

What I need to know

Several international car hire companies operate out of Marrakech airport, so you'll easily get a vehicle suitable for you. However, it's wise to compare car hire through our site before you go, as touts operate within the terminals and this can be quite daunting. We've got free customer support for added peace of mind.

Where to pick up my car

Marrakech airport has two passenger terminals, but these are both housed within the same complex and you'll find the desks for all the Marrakech airport car hire firms are clearly signposted. Expect the arrivals halls to be very busy, but you should be able to pick up your vehicle easily.

Where to go

Once you've got your transport sorted, you'll open up a whole new world of exploration. There's a host of tourist hotspots in easy reach of the airport, from traditional souks and regal mosques to Henna tattoo parlours, hammam spas and ancient historical sites. You're likely to run out of holiday time before you run out of inspiration.

Nearby Marrakech airport

Just half an hour's drive from the airport is Marrakech, which offers traditional winding streets and characterful shops, but also modern restaurants and big-brand shops. Ten minutes' drive away are the peaceful Menara Gardens, with their grand pavilion, lake, olive groves and orchards.

On the outskirts of Marrakech is the Palmeraie, an astonishing and enormous oasis where you can enjoy camel and quad bike rides.

Longer drives

Around two hours from Marrakech airport is Essaouira, a charming coastal town with miles of golden sand and picturesque houses nestled within fortified walls. If you want something altogether more bustling, Casablanca is just under three hours away and is the cosmopolitan heart of Morocco. Meanwhile, Rabat is three-and-a-half hours' drive away and is a must for culture vultures.

Eating and drinking

There is everything from big-name fast food outlets to family-run eateries in Marrakech, so you won't struggle for something to eat or drink. Don't miss trying some traditional fare though, including the filling soup harira - made from beans, pasta and spices - and delicious lamb kefta kebabs.

Things to do

You should definitely visit the square of Djemaa El-Fna one evening, as you'll be enchanted by the traditional music, dancing and storytelling, as well as market stalls. In the daytime, you can have fun haggling at the souks and buying everything from tagines to decorative shoes. The tanneries are also well worth checking out.

Sightseeing

The Koutoubia mosque is a must for tourists, as it is the Eiffel Tower of Marrakech and can be seen for miles around, although only Muslims may go in. For history buffs, there are the Saadian Tombs with their beautiful tiled decorations and preserved graves. For a really impressive photo opportunity, don't miss the wonderful 19th century Bahia Palace.
