Where to go

The lively port town of Trapani will be yours to explore as soon as you have your hire car, meaning you can make the most of this beautiful part of Italy. Head to Old Town to wander down the narrow, winding streets, which will lead you to plenty of great eateries and boutiques. Stop off at any one of the stunning historical buildings that are dotted around the town or simply visit the port to soak up the atmosphere.

There are also plenty of other towns in the area, each with their own unique charms and attractions, so make sure you head slightly further afield to really see what the region around Trapani has to offer.

Nearby Trapani

While you have a lot of choices when it comes to locations to visit outside of Trapani, you really need to head to Segesta. Just 33km from the town via the A29 and E933 lie the unexcavated ruins of the Greek town. An incomplete theatre and temple mark the spot as you're driving in, with the town being located on top of a hill. Segesta gives you the chance to step back in time as well as take in some fantastic views.

Less than 30 minutes away from the centre of Trapani via the SP3 is the medieval town of Erice. This town is found at an altitude of 751m, placing it above many areas of Sicily and so offering truly spectacular views. You'll find houses packed closely together and lots of winding streets, with town walls that date back to 1000BC. There is plenty to see here so it is worth making a day of it.

Longer drives

Some of the best historical ruins can be found close to Selinunte, around an hour away from Trapani via the A29. Here you'll find eight Greek temples and the huge Acropolis, which covers 17 hectares. Selinunte is one of the most important ancient areas in Sicily and will give you plenty to learn about, so it is definitely worth seeing if there are any tours available in order to make the most of your visit.

For a longer drive and a chance to take in some stunning coastal views along the way, drive to Santissimo Salvatore. The 315km drive will take you a few hours and the E90 has tolls but you'll be happy you made it when you arrive at the Cathedral of Santissimo Salvatore. Built in 1086, the basilica is incredibly intricate and beautiful, whether you explore inside or out.

Saltworks

Just in front of the town gates of Trapani, you'll find the unmistakable saltworks. These salt fields feature iconic windmills and are part of the history of the area, which has been producing salt since the 15th century. While production has shrunk in modern times, the saltworks still offer great opportunities for photos.

La Colombaia

This area close to the harbour entrance has a number of great attractions you'll want to visit when staying in Trapani, including Torre Colombaia. This octagonal fortress and former prison is also known as Castello di Mare and has a long history. You'll also find the 14th-century Torre di Ligny at the end of the pier, which was a defensive tower but is now home to a lovely little museum.

Chiesa del Collegio

The beautiful church was built between 1606 and 1638 and offers a highly decorated facade that you could spend hours looking at, The architecture of this building is truly spectacular and has a long history that is worth learning about when you visit. Keep an eye out for an ancient wooden crucifix designed by Giuseppe Milanti, and some great paintings.
