Longer drives

Pisa is also well-placed for day trips to other stunning Italian locations, including Florence. Take the A11 and then the E76 to be in the city in as little as an hour and a half. While you won't be able to see all that Florence has on offer in a day, you can certainly try. Among some of Florence's best-known attractions are Michelangelo's 'David' and Brunelleschi's Dome. The city is a wonder of architecture and art from the Italian Renaissance, which is why it is one of the most popular cities in Europe for tourists.

If you have an interest in art, you may want to make the 61km journey to the medieval castle in Vinci. The castle is now the Museo Leonardiano, offering you a chance to see some of Leonardo Da Vinci's machines, models, notes and drawings. Leaning Tower

Perhaps the most famous of all the historic sights in Pisa is the Leaning Tower. The foundation stone to this iconic tower was laid in 1173 and it was designed to look similar to the cathedral facade. Work hadn't even finished on the tower when it started to lean due to the south side sinking and steps were taken to try and stop it leaning. You really can't visit Pisa without heading to the tower.

Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta

Just next to the Leaning Tower is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, which is perhaps the most important example of Pisan architecture. The stunning Romanesque basilica really is awe-inspiring. Construction started on the cathedral around 1064, making it one of the most important historic sites in Pisa.

Campo Santo

The Sacred Field of Campo Santo was built in 1278 and is the perfect place to go on a bright sunny day. It was constructed to allow for the citizens of Pisa to be buried under sacred soil and is now one of the most picturesque locations in Pisa.
