Olbia is the start of Costa Smeralda - the Emerald Coast - which goes right down to the tip of Capo de Testa. There are other places of interest not far from Olbia, including Agriturismo La Mesenda, which has a lot of structures from the Stone and Copper Ages for you to explore. A world away from the glittery waters and busy resorts, Agriturismo features burial sites, nuraghi towers and chambered tombs. You can reach the site in around 30 minutes via SP73 and Strada Statale 125 Orientale Sarda.

On the other side of the island of Sardinia is the Spanish-inspired town of Alghero, which takes under two hours to reach via the SS597. It is also home to the cathedral of Santa Maria, a 19th-century church that sits on a cliff, which features a sheer drop into the valley. This is one of the most beautiful mountainous regions in Sardinia and offers a nice break from the coast.
