Hiring a car in Alghero

One of the most beautiful cities in Sardinia, Alghero draws in tourists from around the world, and for good reasons. A wonderful medieval destination, this city is the main resort in the north-west of the island so you'll find that it gets busy throughout the summer months.

The unique culture of Alghero - it is heavily influenced by Spain, as shown by its Catalan language - coupled with a stunning marina and fantastic beaches mean that the city has plenty to offer. Explore its winding, cobbled streets, atmospheric cafes and gothic styling to see exactly why this part of Italy is so popular. Make the most of your time in Alghero by hiring a car, which will let you see everything Sardinia has to offer.

Where to pick up your car

You can collect your hire car as soon as you land, as a lot of companies operate at Alghero-Fertilia Airport (AHO). Pick up your luggage and head to the arrivals hall where you'll find the car hire desks. The pick up point is also at the airport and is located in the car park nearest the terminal.

Nearby Alghero

One of the nicest beaches in this area of Sardinia is Spiaggia di Mugoni, which is around 30 minutes away via the SS127bis. With fine, white sand and clear green water, the beach is truly beautiful. It is also quite large so you shouldn't have any trouble finding somewhere to lay out and soak up the sun. When you fancy a dip, you'll find that the water is very warm and calm as the beach is in a sheltered area.

Just over 36km away via the Strada Statale 291 from Alghero lies one of the oldest cities on the island of Sardinia. Sassari is a sprawling inland city that has a lovely busy atmosphere and plenty of culture for you to soak up. You may not think that Sassari has as much to offer as Alghero at first glance, but it won't take you long to discover its charm. The city features a great historic centre, ornate piazzas and busy medieval alleyways that hide a lot of treasures.

Longer drives

Sardinia is littered with ancient ruins, but at Tharros you'll find a mixture of Carthaginian, Phoenician and Roman structures. Two hours down the E25 from Alghero lies the varied ruins, which overlook the ocean and offer stunning views. Once you've wandered through the ruins, be sure to head to Cabras to visit the Museo Civico Giovanni Marongiu, which displays some brilliant finds from the area.

The famous Emerald Coast - or Costa Smeralda - lies on the other side of the island and is the ideal choice for a day trip if you want your pick of some of the best beaches in the world. Drive to Olbia via the SS597 for 136km to provide you with the best starting point. Then you can simply head along the coast until you find a cove you like the look of, although you'll be spoilt for choice.

Sea walls

One attraction it will be hard to miss while in Alghero is the city's ancient sea walls. These were constructed sometime in the 16th century and are one of the most important historic sites in the city. They run from Porta a Mare to Piazza Sulis and feature a pedestrian path along the top so you can take in the wonderful sea views. You'll also find great restaurants and cafes here, so why not take a seat in the sunshine and enjoy some great food and drink?

Centro Storico
